Beginning the Construction of Your Steel Building

Your steel building has arrived and it's time to unload and begin the construction process. Pre-planning of the unloading operations is such an important part of the construction procedure for steel buildings. Detailed planning is necessary at the job site where storage space is limited. A planned separation of the materials that make of the prefab steel buildings in the order of the erection process is necessary to minimize the costly double handling of materials. While set procedures are not possible in all cases, special attention should be given to the following items:

- The prefab building columns and rafters are usually unloaded near their respective installed positions on blocking on the concrete slab in position for easy erection.

- Endwalls for the metal buildings are usually laid out at each end of the concrete slab with the columns near the respective anchor bolts.

- The metal building hardware packages should be located centrally, usually along one sidewall near the center of the metal garage. This will minimize walking distances to other parts of the concrete foundation area.

- Purlins and girts for the prefab buildings, depending on the number of bundles, are usually stored near the sidewalls clear of other packages or parts.

- Sheeting packages are usually located along one or both sidewalls off the ground and sloping to one end to encourage drainage in case of rain. Also, all bundles of primed parts should be stored at an angle to allow any trapped water to drain away and permit air circulation for drying. If water is allowed to remain for extended periods in bundles of primed parts, such as the girts and purlins, the pigment will fade and the paint will gradually soften, reducing the bond to the steel. Puddles of water should not be allowed to collect and remain on columns or rafters for the same reason. All primer should be touched up as required before construction of the prefab metal buildings begins.

- The accessories for your steel barn are usually unloaded on a corner of the concrete slab or off the slab near one end of the steel building to keep them as much out of the way as possible from the active area during the erection of your steel garage.

As you can see, a great amount of time and trouble can be saved if your building site is set up according to a pre-arranged plan. Proper location and handling of the components that make up the metal barns and metal garages will eliminate unnecessary handling. Another additional tip when preparing your job site for an easy construction process is that an access area through the center of the steel building should be left for large construction equipment. And always take the steps to protect your entire job site from vandalism and theft.
